Porsche Unveils 911 Speedster, Powered by GT3 Engine
Emphasis on heritage, performance, lightweight handling, and exclusivity.
After revealing its plans for the 911 Speedster in the fall, Porsche has officially unveiled the model at the 2019 New York Auto Show this week. The highly-anticipated edition will cost customers a little over a quarter million dollars at the $275,000 USD price tag — for those that can afford to get their hands on one of the 1,948 units in production.
Porsche’s 911 Speedster operates on a 4.0 liter flat-six engine — extracted from the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS — and can hit a top speed of up to 192 mph. The car outputs 502 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque, and can reach 0-60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds. The GT Sport six-speed manual transmission, paired with individual throttle bodies, result in extremely sharp, instantaneous throttle response. The Speedster’s signature streamliner bulges and manually-operated lightweight fabric top remains intact, differentiating it from standard cabriolets but keeping the form and functionality of convertible driving. On the interior, the door panels feature storage nets and woven door pulls to round out the premium details.
Purchasers of the vehicle will also have the opportunity to buy a special Porsche Design 911 Speedster Chronograph watch, which is crafted with a carbon fiber dial, a rotor that looks like the car’s center lock wheel and a strap made from Porsche’s interior leather. The price of the timepiece stands at $12,911 USD.
