Sky Ferreira Announces First New Album in Six Years & Shares "Downhill Lullaby"
‘Masochism’ is on the way.
Nearly six years after the release of her last and debut studio album Night Time, My Time, Sky Ferreira is revealing her next full-length LP and introducing the project with her first new solo single in several years, “Downhill Lullaby.” Notably, “Downhill Lullaby” was produced by the trio of Sky Ferreira, Dean Hurley and Jorge Elbrecht; it’s first look at the direction of its creator’s sophomore album, Masochism.
The catalyst for the creation of “Downhill Lullaby” came from a “vision of water in darkness,” and in an exclusive interview with Pitchfork, Ferreira likens the process behind the record to “Mickey Mouse’s Fantasia turn as the sorcerer’s apprentice.”
“You know how all the brooms are making a gigantic mess and the water starts rising and rising and rising and rising?” she says. “It was sort of like that: Magical, but at the same time, ‘What is going on?’ And then cleaning it all up.”
Sky Ferreira also explained to Pitchfork how she directed the “Downhill Lullaby” violinist Nils Gröndahl to perform for their recording. “‘Play it as if you’re one of the birds in Snow White, singing underwater, while slowly being suffocated by plastic,’” she recalls.
To describe the sound and feel of her upcoming album, Sky Ferreira called the effort “very big, but also very violent,” although “not all the songs are super-dark.” The project was put together during studio sessions in Los Angeles and Copenhagen.
