'Pennywise: The Story of It' Documentary Explores How Stephen King's Novel Became a Cult Classic
Relive the horror in anticipation for the upcoming sequel.
Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel It is undoubtedly a pop culture phenomenon, and the upcoming documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT explores just how it came to be.
Featuring the original cast and crew of the Tommy Lee Wallace-directed ABC miniseries from 1990, they breakdown the impact of the creepy clown and how it scared a whole generation, attributing the cult favorite’s secrets to success to Tim Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise, the stigma of clowns (including the crimes of John Wayne Gacy), and the manual special effects handled by the crew. Missing from the documentary are the late Jonathan Brandis, John Ritter, and Harry Anderson, but the remaining Losers including Seth Green, Emily Perkins, and Tim Reid make appearances.
The 2017 remake casted Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jaeden Lieberher, and Jack Grazer, Wyat Oleff, Jeremy Ray Taylor and Chosen Jacobs as the younger counterparts. Meanwhile, it’s been announced that Bill Hader, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Jay Ryan, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone, and Andy Bean will portray the adults of The Loser’s Club for IT: Chapter Two. Bill Skarsgård will continue with his role as Pennywise the Clown.
No official release date for the documentary has been announced, but Pennywise: The Story of IT can be expected to come out this 2019. Watch the lengthy trailer above now.
