Facebook & Instagram Introduce Social Media Time-Limiting Tool
To help users monitor how much time they are spending on each platform.
Social media apps Facebook and Instagram have just released a new time-limiting tool allowing users to monitor just how much time they are spending on each platform.
The purpose of the new dashboards, which includes a daily reminder and a new notifications-limiting tool, is to help users reduce their time spent on both platforms, which studies have shown causes negative impact on mental health. Users will now be able to set reminders for themselves when they have reached their self-set time limit. The new tool will also allow users to mute social media notifications for a period of time.
Grant Blank, from the Oxford Internet Institute told the BBC:
“I wouldn’t say it’s a radical change or that it’s going to really change a lot about the way that most people use Facebook or Instagram. It strikes me as a way to balance their corporate interest of keeping people spending as much time as possible on Facebook, while still being responsive to people who find the continual notifications to be disturbing or distracting.”
