Netflix Releases Trailer for True Crime Documentary, 'The Staircase'
Documenting Michael Peterson’s tumultuous 2001 murder trial.
Netflix has secured the rights to The Staircase, a documentary from Oscar-winning documentarian Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. First released in 2005, the documentary has been recut and rearranged, stretched from an eight-part series to ten episodes, complete with new footage. Centering around novelist Michael Peterson’s headline-grabbing 2001 trial, the film sheds light on the events leading up to and during the trial, exploring the evidence without bias. Peterson was originally arrested on charges of murdering his wife, Kathleen, though he proclaimed his innocence, claiming that she instead fell down the stairs. What followed was an increasingly shocking series of events, complete with a stunning revelation that only came to light eight years later, upon a review of the blood spatter findings in 2010.
