A Marathon of Ryuichi Sakamoto-Scored Films is Screening at an NYC Cinema
Including ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.’

A cinema in New York City will show eight classic films scored by legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto in celebration of the release of his new album, Async (which was announced back in March). The LP — Sakamoto’s first in eight years — is described by the composer himself as “a soundtrack for an Andrei Tarkovsky film that does not exist.” The screenings, dubbed Forbidden Colours: Ryuichi Sakamoto at the Movies, will take place from May 12 to 15 at Quad City Cinema in Manhattan — films include Sakamoto’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Pedro Almodovar’s High Heels (1991), Nagisa Oshima’s Gohatto (1999) and more. Head over Quad City Cinema’s website for tickets and more information, and watch Ryuichi’s performance of “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” below.
