Joji Takes Us Desk Shopping at IKEA
From recreating “A Milli” to sold-out shows, peep our video interview with the budding musician.
Fresh off the release of the Trippie Redd-assisted acoustic duet version of “18,” 88rising affiliate Joji decided to enjoy the spoils of his success with a trip to everyone’s favorite Scandinavian home furnishings institution: IKEA. Documenting the shopping spree — and the energetic performance that capped off the day — we accompanied Joji as he picked up some new furniture and opened up about his origins.
Born and raised in Japan, Joji learned about American culture like many other overseas kids his age did: rap music and 2000s internet culture. From early YouTube and internet humor to Lil Wayne’s 2008 classic “A Milli,” the most significant parts of Joji’s upbringing gave him the foundations he needed for the multi-discipline career he has now. Although uncertain about a career in music at first, everything paid off after the first few songs as he now stands as one of the modern era’s more acclaimed singer-songwriters.

Last month, Joji linked up with Rich Brian for a record off the “Dat $tick” rapper’s debut studio album Amen.
