Japan Introduces "Supreme" Bullet Train for 2020 Olympics
Elevated rail transportation.
Ahead of the Tokyo-hosted 2020 Olympic Games, Japan is rolling out a new iteration of its famed Shinkansen, or bullet train. This “Supreme” iteration offers maximum comfort along with familiar high-end performance, aiming to become the de facto mode of transport for the countless visitors heading to the island nation in support of the Games. Most of the features are similar to the current train models — top speeds will hit 177 mph on the Tokaido Shinkansen line and 186 mph on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, while the internal design offers a look familiar to anyone who’s ever ridden the bullet train. However, new aspects include a modified “dual supreme wing type” design that aims to improve airflow, and extra leg room thanks to extended reclining capabilities.
Japan is testing the new trains now, with plans to introduce them in time for the 2020 Olympics.
