Texas Retreat Strikes Balance Between Rustic & Refined

Expansive remote regions offer unbounded possibilities for designing new homes. Take, for instance, Michael Hsu Office of Architecture’s two-story abode along the Llano River in central Texas. Entitled “The Llano Retreat,” the establishment champions its natural surroundings with locally sourced limestone alongside charred wood that make up a bulk of its overall design. Not to mention, tall glass windows offer an immediate connection with the surrounding landscape. Moreover, the u-shaped retreat features a front courtyard with the rear overlooking “a gentle slope dotted with trees, shrubs, and wildflowers,” as per Dezeen. “The design is a result of the knowledge of the landscape and the desire to retain the connection to nature,” said the Austin-based firm in a statement.

As far as interiors are concerned, the living room features a double-height ceiling with the dining area equipped with walnut tables and upholstered chairs using vintage military tents for a more rustic appeal. “Soft grey upholstery, handwoven rugs, and rich leathers complement the interiors for a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere overlooking the rustic Hill Country landscape,” said the firm.
