John Legend & Chance The Rapper Share New Video for "Penthouse Floor"
Inspired by upward mobility and escapism.
John Legend sheds some light on some of the pressing issues that’s taking place in the country in his artful new video for “Penthouse Floor,” his Chance The Rapper-assisted single off his latest album, Darkness and Light. The video follows Legend around who as a hotel employee, takes a trip up to the “Penthouse Floor” which serves as a safe haven of sorts following protests going on outside. You’ll find Legend playing the piano while other hotel employees, cops, and people from all walks of life mingle and enjoy each other’s company.
After a while, everyone begins to vanish and Legend comes to the realization that it was all just a dream. According to Legend, the track inspired by upward mobility and escapism saying, “The more I sat with the song as I was making the record, I wanted to have more attention in the song where I was thinking about not just upward mobility and escaping, but also thinking about what it means to come from humble beginnings like I come from, a blue-collar family, where people that are often ignored and forgotten about, and to elevate to more rarified air like I am now but to not forget about where you come from and to use your power and status to uplift people and shine a light on places where we come from. That is what the song lyrically evolved to and that is what the video represents.”
Meanwhile, you won’t see Chance The Rapper make an appearance in the video due to logistics but he’s also been taking a stand and making a positive impact in his hometown where he recently raised 2.2 million dollars for Chicago’s public schools.
