Hackers Steal $70 Million USD Worth of Bitcoin
Another massive cyber heist.
With bitcoin at an all-time high — currently soaring in the region of $16,000 USD and up — hackers have somehow made off with stealing as many as 4,700 BTC, an amount worth roughly $76 million USD. NiceHash, a Slovenian company that describes itself as the largest marketplace for mining digital currencies, announced that it was suspending operations for at least 24 hours due to a security breach. The mining marketplace initially stated its service was undergoing “maintenance” on Twitter, later adding it was “working hard” to resolve issues affecting the site.
At the beginning of the year, one bitcoin was worth less than $1,000 USD. There have been several heists on the cryptocurrency, including one that led to the 2-14 collapse of Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest bitcoin market. The NiceHash team urged its users to change their online passwords immediately as a precaution as they continue to investigate the full scope of what exactly happened.
Dear NiceHash users,
we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused. Our team is working hard to resolve the issues on the service, it might take longer than expected. We’ll keep you updated!— NiceHash (@NiceHashMining) December 6, 2017
