Tesla Wins 100 Day Bet: World's Largest Battery Is Now Complete
Elon Musk saves South Australia from energy crisis.
In March, Elon Musk made a now famous bet on Twitter with Mike Cannon-Brookes of Atlassian that he would build the world’s largest lithium-ion battery in 100 days.
Already halfway complete with the project when the challenge commenced, Musk kept his word: Tesla has just finished making the world’s largest lithium ion battery for South Australia, an undertaking which would have cost the inventor at least $50 million USD.
The 129-megawatt-hour battery — three times bigger than any in the world — will help ease South Australia’s energy issues. A series of blackouts within the past 18 months has forced the state government to find power supply solutions. The battery is part of a $550 million plan to help solve South Australia’s energy crisis. Although the state has not disclosed how much it’s paying for the battery, successful completion should infuse Tesla with much-needed funding to continue operations after it was announced the company spends about half a million dollars per hour.
