Tesla Has Only Built 260 Model 3s
It looks like “production bottlenecks” are causing problems.
Just a couple weeks after the discontinuation of the Model S, Tesla has revealed the inner workings of its third quarter Model 3 production. As Business Insider reveals, the California-based company has only assembled 260 Model 3 sedans — out of 26,150 vehicles overall — in the third quarter, coming incredibly short of the planned 1,500 vehicle goal.
“Model 3 production was less than anticipated due to production bottlenecks,” Tesla explained in today’s statement to investors. “Although the vast majority of manufacturing subsystems at both our California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory are able to operate at a high rate, a handful have taken longer to activate than expected.”
Luckily, Tesla says that it hasn’t come across any “fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain;” the manufacturer understands the steps it must take to mend the issue and appears to be on the path to fixing it as soon as possible. With 455,000 Model 3 orders lined up as of August, customers who place an order today won’t receive their ride until at least the middle of 2018.
