Having courted controversy last month when he placed an image of a child over the U.S.-Mexico border, pseudonymous French artist JR has now returned to the location to host a picnic that crosses country lines. The “Giant Picnic” saw a long table featuring two eyes — described by the artist as the “eye of a dreamer” — erected in the border town of Tecate, just south of San Diego.

In an Instagram post, JR explained that it featured “people eating the same food, sharing the same water, enjoying the same music.” In the comments on the post, JR also revealed that the project was “illegal on the US side” — which is why half of the people were sitting on the floor.

After you’ve taken a look at the “Giant Picnic,” check out other JR installations including the athletes for last year’s Olympic Games in Rio and the “hidden” Louvre in Paris.
