'Pokémon Duel' Is Now Free to Download on All Apple and Android Devices
See how the mobile strategy game works.
Despite the plummeting popularity of Pokémon Go, Nintendo has just launched another pocket monster app for all Apple and Android users. Dubbed Pokémon Duel, this new mobile strategy game is basically a hybrid of the classic trading card bout and the aforesaid augmented reality variant. Also, before you shake your head in dismay, it’s important to note that this game was developed by The Pokemon Company and HEROZ — not Niantic, who created Go.
So, how does it work? Players will choose a total of six Pokémon and then move the ubiquitous creatures around a digital board. In order to win, you must reach a particular point in your opponent’s section and at the same time, prevent them from invading your territory with their own monsters. When your figure comes face to face with your enemy’s, the two creatures will immediately start a battle. You will need to rely on a spinning wheel to see which attack your Pokémon will use. Presumably, whichever player nabs the most sections on the board will be the victor. Not to mention, users can compete against other players across the globe and will be pitted against an opponent who more or less has the same skill level.
Similar to Go, Pokémon Duel boasts in-app purchases, but the game itself is free to download. One of the paid features includes booster packs, which apparently give a player more creatures. Of course, you can obtain booster packs for free if you keep winning battles and wrangle a slew of gems (game currency), which are used to purchase these attributes at no real world cost.
PD officially debuted in Japan last year, but was unveiled this Tuesday stateside. See the game in action above and let us know if you’re willing to try it out. Here’s the download link for Apple iOS and Android users, respectively.
Will it outshine Pokémon Go?
