Johnny Depp Is Going to Try to Solve Biggie & Tupac's Murders
Well, on the big screen at least.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, but before it even gets underway, what’s sure to be one of its biggest pieces of news has already been let out of the bag: Johnny Depp has signed on to Labyrinth to play late LAPD detective Russell Poole — the man who investigated the still unsolved murders of both Biggie and Tupac in the late ’90s.
Based on Poole’s own book of the same name, Labyrinth will focus on the detective’s investigation of the assassinations and his ultimate (though still unproven) findings: that Death Row’s Suge Knight orchestrated the killings to avoid paying Tupac millions of dollars worth of royalties, setting it up to look like the culmination of the violence and bloodshed of the East Coast vs. West Coast rap feud. As Screen Daily points out, Poole ultimately left the LAPD as his investigation uncovered widespread corruption within the department and dedicated the remainder of his life to solving the murders once and for all. Sadly, however, Poole passed away last year of an apparent heart attack.
Though a release date has yet to be set, Labyrinth will be directed by Brad Furman (The Infiltrator, The Lincoln Lawyer) while Christian Contreras will handle the screenplay.
