Designing a Sneaker From Scratch With Jon Tang of FRONTEER
An elevated project for burgeoning fashion designers.
If you’ve already conquered the task of screen-printing T-shirts, what’s the next step? Designing sneakers of course. To aid in this challenge Jon Tang, creative director of FRONTEER, explains the intricacies involved when designing and making a sneaker from scratch. With help from fashion designer Mike Cherman, the pair examine the necessary steps from initial ideation and sketching to the accompanying “Tech Pack”–a factory legible translation of the freehand sketches that contains the necessary data when it comes to scale, all the angles and views, a material map that lays out the foundation for textures and makeup, and more. Jon continues to share his advice when it comes to starting the project you may have in mind, along with some words of wisdom to help tackle the albeit daunting undertaking.
