Swathes of Supreme and Stussy collaborations aside, the mid noughties birthed some of the sneaker world’s most revered, from the much storied Nike “Pigeon” Dunk Low Pro SB, Diamond Supply Co. x Nike Dunk Low Pro SB “Tiffany,” to the UNDEFEATED Air Jordan IV which received a bold MA-1 makeover.
Needless to say, the amalgamation of two desired brands to produce limited-edition silhouettes will always strike a cord with many of us, yet there’s no denying that the lust for footwear drops has made a gradual shift towards in-line sneakers. Nike’s HTM powerhouse needs no introduction, while the Three Stripes’ recent Tubular category has also built up a loyal following. Yet arguably the model to take the crown in recent times has to be the adidas NMD, a sneaker that’s even caused riots in parts of Asia.
Continuing the widely popular tech-meets-lifestyle fad, the NMD pays homage to adidas’s archive (borrowing cues from the Micro Pacer, the Rising Star, and the Boston Super) in the most alluring way possible. Its ubiquitous BOOST sole may be a head-turner at first glance, yet it is the flexible sock-like upper that gives the NMD its versatility. Stripped-back with no extraneous panels, the trimmed upper is an open canvas for adidas to toy with each season.
