Set inside the hallowed St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal church on Park Avenue, it was clear that Alexander Wang wanted to set a gothic vibe to unveil his 2016 fall ready-to-wear collection. Shortly after the show, he took to Instagram to post his inspiration for the collection: a Hot Topic storefront from the ’90s. The assemblage of looks on the runway aptly channeled the angsty, rebellious teenager you’d expect to see frequenting the mall establishment. Supreme-inspired box logos with the words “strict,” “faded” and “girls” were emblazoned across beanies, sweaters and thighs, along with classic Chanel tweed hacked into mini-skirts and stitched together by metal hardware. Some of the standout pieces included a floor-length leather jacket, along with skirts and tank tops bearing aesthetically cut-out marijuana leaf accents. Wang not only subverted familiar looks from streetwear and high-end fashion, but also juxtaposed his overall setting. Designs also included stripper iconography embellished onto mohair sweaters and prison-influenced garb with the word “county” across the back, opposing the religious backdrop of the show’s locale. His show notes explained that the collection “deliberately opposes standard definitions of beauty and taste.” View the entire collection above and head over to Alexander Wang’s website to stream the show.
