Rare OG Nike Waffle Racers Appear on eBay
One of the first Moon Shoes ever made and worn in 1972.
A rare pair of first generation Nike Moon Shoes, also known as Waffle Racers, has made its way onto eBay, where it’s currently bidding for more than $5,000 USD. Designed by Geoff Hollister, under the direction of Bill Bowerman, the sneakers were worn by marathon runner Bruce Mortenson during the 1972 Olympic Trials. These were the first Waffles ever made and used for competition, with only about a dozen produced at the time. “The Moon Shoes were definitely different than the Tigers I had been wearing. More cushioning was the main difference. The Waffle Soles had a different feel as I felt quite a bit higher off the ground,” Mortenson told the seller, ShoeZeum.
With an upper constructed of imported nylon from Japan and waffle outsoles hand-cut and stitched in Oregon, this was the initial iteration of Moon Shoes constructed by Nike. Get a closer look through the images above and head over to eBay for more information.
