Carhartt WIP's ‘Paving Space’ by Raphael Zarka Explores Skateboarding and Mathematical Theories
Skateable sculptures inspired by geometry and crystallography.
After releasing the trailer back in November, Carhartt WIP has now revealed the full video for the short film Paving Space. The project is what the brand describes as “an unconventional encounter between maths, art and skateboarding.” The concept began when the label started to work with ISLE skateboards — both parties wanted to do something more progressive between art and skate, so they brought along artist and fellow skateboarder, Raphaël Zarka to helm the project. The result is Zarka’s large scale reconstructions of 19th Century mathematician Arthur Moritz Schoenflies’s models — shapes derived from geometry and crystallography that have been turned into sculptures you can skate on.
Riders featured in the vid are Sylvain Tognelli, Nick Jensen, Casper Brooker, Jan Kliewer, Joseph Biais, Rémy Taveira, Josh Pall, Chris Jones, and Armand Vaucher. Watch it above and let us know your thoughts.
