'Luke Cage' Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker Expands on Why the Series Is the Ultimate Hip-Hop Western
He also reveals why each episode is named after a Gang Starr song.
GQ recently had the opportunity to talk with Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker about why the new Netflix Marvel series is the perfect hip-hop Western. In the interview, Coker reveals how nervous he was to set the bar just as high as Netflix’s other comic series, Daredevil and Jessica Jones in terms of writing direction. He explains he wanted to do the show justice with interpreting the main characters, especially the villains such as Cottonmouth and Diamondback.
Additionally, Luke Cage has been compared to the blaxploitation films of old, but Coker insists that the series is more about being a hip-hop Western. As for the show’s episode titles having the same names as Gang Starr tracks, he says, “So Gang Starr music is really very particular, because Gang Starr of course is gangster, which is the attitude. But there is a definite intellectual bent to it, and that’s kind of the attitude of the show.”
