Spike Lee Is Boycotting the Oscars

Outspoken filmmaker Spike Lee is set to boycott this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, in protest at the lack of nominations for people of color. “How is it possible that for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the actor category are white?” said Lee, who won an honorary Oscar just last year for his contributions to filmmaking, “And let’s not even get into the other branches. 40 white actors in two years and no flava at all” he continued via Instagram. Lee is one of a growing number of voices within the industry seemingly exasperated with the lack of diversity during awards season, with Will Packer making similar assertions over the weekend and Jada Pinkett-Smith also reportedly calling for a boycott.
