For the latest installment of Essentials, singer-songwriter Jesse Boykins III gives fans a look at a handful of his indispensable items. The Chicago-born creative proclaims himself as the visionary leader of a genre called “world soul,” and a brief look into his background may reveal why. His interests in music first sparked early in life, as a young Boykins III picked up singing from his aunts before joining his school choir in Jamaica at the age of nine. He then relocated to Miami, and eventually settled in Brooklyn, continuing to work as a songwriter and vocalist along the way. His unique experiences travelling throughout the Americas is directly translated into his music, and more tangibly, in these Essentials. Self care products from different areas the world are arrayed — such as Moroccan hair oil; and raw Manuka honey, used to protect his vocal chords. Other common necessities are included, such as a passport, laptop and set of headphones. Boykins III also includes a custom designed leather bag which was done in collaboration with Liebeskind.
