Audi has been testing its own autonomous vehicle models, and the German automaker recently unveiled the R8 E-Tron Piloted Driving Technical Concept at the 2015 International CES Asia. Based on the electrically-powered, high performance R8 E-Tron sports car, this “piloted driving” project is performance-focused and has 456 horsepower capabilities, 679 pound-feet of torque and 340 kW of power, which enables it to reach 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds. It features the new R8’s multi-material Space Frame, a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) rear car body module, e-tron-specific lighting, and a high-voltage, T-shaped Audi lithium-ion battery that can be charged in less than two hours. Inside, there’s a Combined Charging System (CSS) for direct charging, and a luggage compartment that’s lined with corrugated walls. In place of a driver, the car is controlled by the ”central driver assistance control unit” (zFAS), which receives sensory information from a variety of ultrasonic sensors, including multiple video cameras, a laser scanner, and radar transmitters at the front and rear. Do you think the automotive industry is heading towards an inevitable future of driver-less vehicles?
