The move arrives as Volkswagen initiates a sweeping restructuring plan. Last week the group announced an overarching corporate strategy that dictates approximately one-third of non-strategic activities will be either divested or realigned. Management requires every target firm to deliver a clear strategic and financial contribution to the core business. Divestment of a dedicated two-wheel asset like Ducati sits squarely within this shift, streamlining the enterprise to double down on cars.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed that Ducati will be discussed as a direct part of this ongoing evaluation process, though he emphasized that nothing has been decided yet. For Volkswagen, shedding the historic motorcycle manufacturer that dates back to 1926 would mark the end of an era. The marque was acquired on July 19, 2012 as the eleventh brand to join the group’s portfolio. Bloomberg estimates that Ducati could be worth around €1.25 billion EUR or $1.45 billion USD if the divestment moves forward.
The potential sale comes at a turbulent financial moment for the motorcycle manufacturer, which is currently navigating major profitability pressures. Last year Ducati posted an operating profit of €52 million EUR or $60.39 million USD, representing a sharp 42.8 percent drop. Executives attributed this plunge in operating profit directly to unfavorable exchange rates alongside tariffs applied by the Trump administration.
External economic hurdles have also coincided with declining sales across the board. The brand delivered 50,895 motorcycles globally last year, representing a 7 percent overall decline. Despite the downturn, the lineup still moved volume across its core offerings. The Multistrada maintained its position as the best-selling model with 13,873 units sold. Consumers purchased 10,606 Panigale units while the Scrambler lineups accounted for an additional 5,814 units sold.
