Audi's New Nuvolari Supercar Is More Important Than You Might Think

Audi revealed the Nuvolari just a few days before and in our minds, it’s exactly what the world of supercars needs right now. Here’s what we mean.
The Nuvolari – teased last year as the “Concept C” – is Audi’s latest high-performance hybrid supercar producing a combined 1,001 PS (approximately 987 horsepower). Its powertrain integrates a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, capable of 10,000 rpm, alongside three 110-kW axial-flux electric motors and a 7.3-kWh lithium-ion battery. This configuration enables a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.6 seconds and a top speed exceeding 350 km/h (217 mph). The vehicle utilizes a lightweight Audi Space Frame with a carbon fiber exterior, maximizing torsional rigidity while keeping weight into consideration. Driving dynamics are governed by a predictive quattro system featuring variable torque vectoring. Finally, Formula 1-inspired active aerodynamics, including an adaptive rear wing with DRS, generate over 400 kg of downforce, a high margin for production cars these days.
But these figures and facts aren’t what make this car important.
Currently, we’ve seen some really divisive decisions from car brands. Some are taking wild risks with concepts that completely redefine their brand. Others are playing it safe – maybe a little too safe – with an overabundant reliance on special or limited editions of their most popular cars. The Audi Nuvolari is neither.
Many will say the design is too radical, but is it? We recognize a lot of elements of the R8 in the Nuvolari, mostly those contrasting side blades that defined it. A tapering rear roofline also reminds us of the R8, giving the Nuvolari’s a set of sculpted shoulders. It’s also very low and sleek, if it follows the height of the Concept C which we saw in person.
When the R8 released, it was refreshing not only for its wild looks, but it was a halo car that was realistic, and thus 44,000 of them were made. A classic ‘Top Gear’ episode found it had the “best” fuel efficiency out of a wide selection of supercars, making it useable. The V8 (from the RS4) made it “entry level” for a lot of enthusiasts, yet still looked like a million bucks.
If the Nuvolari heralds the return of the Audi halo car, it could cause a riff in the industry to head backwards towards that trend of using great tech, smart decisions in power that makes sense, and wrapping it up in a design that’s new and fresh, but not trying to reinvent the company or what it stands for.
