It happens with every new generation of Apple products; we marvel at the technology, design and innovations of Cupertino’s latest, before inevitably asking ourselves and those around us the same question: what’s next? Where can Apple possibly go from here? Well a recent patent application revealed by AppleInsider provides a clue as to where Apple may be headed with future releases – waterproofing. It’s something fans have wanted for years, and the lack of it on Apple products has become harder to dismiss after Samsung introduced the water-resistant Galaxy S5 and Sony debuted its fully waterproof Xperia. The patent, filed by Cupertino last March, describes a new method of applying a very thin hydrophobic coating (from 1 to 10 microns thick) to specific internal components, such as circuit boards. This process would allow Apple to effectively waterproof its devices without having to enlarge or modify the device’s casing in any significant way. Apple has never been one to sacrifice design for functionality, so perhaps the delay has been motivated by the search for the right waterproofing method that could be integrated with Apple’s uncompromising design. This new patent may do just that. It envisions a day where accidentally dropping your phone in the toilet or prematurely jumping into a pool before realizing your phone is still in your pocket no longer spells disaster. Take heart, that day may be coming soon.
