While entrants to the headwear game are often met with skepticism – given the market’s ostensible saturation – small brands have managed to forge a place for themselves through the use of innovative materials and patterning. No brand perhaps better embodies this than Taipei-based DSSENT, now in its sixth year, which has recently opened up its first flagship location in its mother city. A true brick-and-mortar space, DSSENT’s new store contrasts minimal concrete aesthetic with its bold, pattered headwear and apparel offerings. Adding to the juxtaposition are small cues of the brand’s inspirational palette: Tupac covers a vintage issue of TIME; Gangstarr, KRS-One, and Slick Rick trading cards are neatly organized on a table; the register station isn’t so much cut as it is knocked out, with the crusty fringes deliberately exposed and unfinished. Situated on an infamous strip of Taipei’s streetwear scene, be sure to check out DSSENT at its fitting new home if in the Taipei area.
