Ben Venom x OBEY 2015 Holiday Artist Series
Vintage tattoos, the occult and motorcycle gangs come together in a unique practice of DIY aesthetics and traditional quiltwork.
Rounding off the year, OBEY Clothing shares its Holiday Artist Series installment for 2015, featuring San Francisco artist Ben Venom. As a unique integration of modern street art, DIY aesthetics, and traditional craftmaking, Ben’s dynamic vision is personified through his latest quiltwork for the streetwear label. Constructed entirely out of recycled materials that spawned from a vast accumulation of neglected heavy metal and punk rock tees, the guest artist describes his practice as a collision of various opposing forces. Inspired by the imagery of vintage tattoos, the occult and motorcycle gangs, Ben aspires to bring together a collection of visuals that rides on the razor’s edge of where something new happens. In a video interview with OBEY, he describes how the holiday series T-shirts came together. Utilizing a collection of old tees provided by Shepard Fairey himself, the artist created a range of entirely functional quilts rendered in his hallmark style. Capturing the final works through high-res imagery, the images were then translated into apparel designs. The limited edition tees retail for $30-40 USD and are now available at OBEY online.
