National Geographic has announced the winners of its 2015 Photo Contest, and as always, they do not fail in communicating the decisive moment captured within the majesty of nature. The winning photo this year depicts a destructive anti-cyclonic tornado narrowly missing a farm in Simla, Colorado, proving a poignant reminder of our helplessness in the face of nature.

Other honorable mentions showcased everything from grand, geological art created by erosion in China’s Tian Shan mountain range, to airborne ballet performed by Alpine choughs in Switzerland. Two particularly symbolic images captured in the built environment also made the final cut: a girl in pink flitting through Lithuania’s Hill of Crosses; and shadow play of one hand passing incense to another under the portraits of a family’s ancestors during Chinese New Year in Taiwan.
