Child Cancer Patients Design Nike Sneakers as Therapy
Sneakers have the power to heal after all.
Often seen as a hyped commodity, sneakers also have the ability to create positive change in people’s lives, as Nike’s initiative with Portland’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has repeatedly shown. GQ paid a visit to the facility as part of its Sneakerheadz mini-documentary series to look at the impact of the collaboration on the lives of the child patients through the eyes of kidney cancer survivor Autumn Boynton and leukemia survivor Elijah Diggins. Featured as part of the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle collection, Autumn’s Air Max 90 design and Elijah’s Air Foamposite design have gone onto inducting other kids throughout the world into sneaker culture whilst also drumming up funds and awareness of the mission of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Watch the video above for a look at the process the children underwent to have their sneaker designs go from paper to reality.
