Resting in the rustic, historic Portuguese city of Guimaraes is the latest work from burgeoning architect Elisabete de Oliveira Saldanha – the House in Guimaraes. A radical amalgamation of motifs ranging from classical arches through boxy modernist structures, this stoic renovated farmhouse is situated on an idyllic series of grassy elevated steppes in Northern Portugal. As with the facade, Saldanha preserved parts of the interior while completely eradicating other ostensibly important historical cues, resulting in a home that boldly balances the past and present. Each steppe plays a key role in the design, with each level flowing into the main cabin of the house – with the exception of the tower, which retains its original privacy. As the house is a private residence, the above photo set may be one’s only chance at touring the interior, but we’d say they’re worth the pleasure anyway.
