For Danielle Pender, women’s magazines were boring. They all followed the same basic formula: highly retouched images, cliche and patronizing content, gaudy visual design. That wasn’t cutting it for Danielle, so she set out create her own mag – one that completely reimagined what a women’s magazine could be. The culmination of her mission is Riposte: a smart, beautifully designed magazine that breaks through the stereotypes of women’s content. No celebrity covers, no patronizing articles, and absolutely no retouched or Photoshopped images of women. Riposte is committed to realism, highlighting women in the most authentic way possible. That same authenticity makes its way into Danielle’s Essentials as well.
Danielle’s style is highlighted by an Elka jacket from Newcastle-based End, and tie-dye Chuck Taylors (standing 6’ tall, Danielle stays away from heels). She complements her look with a Lizzie Kind tassel necklace, a simple tube of MAC red lipstick, and a hand-painted tote bag by Sinhead, which is big enough for gear like her MacBook Pro. In addition to running Riposte, Danielle also curates for the KK Outlet gallery, so a tape measure is always on hand. And for commutes or downtime, Danielle keeps an iPhone 5 loaded with This American Life podcasts, along with an issue of LAW Magazine, and Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki.
