New York-based SOMA Architects has unveiled its latest development set to be built in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Called “BOBO,” the 11-story residential complex incorporates a striking steel-and-glass crystalline geometric design, and looms over a protected heritage structure from the 1920’s in Beirut’s Mar Mikhael district. Endeavoring to respect the more traditional architectural character of the surrounding area while at the same time working around the site’s planning restrictions, the building’s unorthodox but eye-catching shape will house 13 luxury residences as well as retail spaces at street level, replacing a row of disused shops and an early 20th-century building in a neighborhood that is currently undergoing a much needed revitalization.
