As we approach the middle of the decade, it appears more and more artists are exploring new and innovative ways to deliver material to audiences as technology becomes more sophisticated. Well, the latest company to enter into the ongoing exploration is BitTorrent through their paygated bundles. The direct-to-fan publishing platform now features the paygate system, which offers content to be sold directly from artists through the platform, and also offers a huge cut to the artists supplying the material. The first to try on this model was Thom Yorke of Radiohead with the surprise album Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. Now, it seems Diplo is the latest to delve into this music delivery method, dropping a reissue of his 2004 album Florida via a paygated bundle. The bundle breaks down like this: First off, for free, you get an unreleased Eprom remix of “Big Lost,” followed by the stems for “Into the Sun, a message from Diplo, various pieces of art, and emails Diplo sent to his label Big Dada regarding his demo. Finally, the album’s original eleven tracks are available for $5. Get the bundles here.
This news is bound to gain momentum among artists and music retailers so keep your eyes peeled for the continuing dialogue. Oh, and Big Dada will be releasing an Expanded, two-disc version of Florida on Black Friday (November 28), so be sure to pick it up.
