Pharrell Williams' GRAMMY Hat Has A Hip-Hop History

There is little doubt that GRAMMY’s official version of Angelina Jolie’s leg, aka Pharrell Williams‘s gigantic hat, was one of last night’s ceremony‘s highlights, but what only few might know, it actually has a solid hip-hop history. As Skateboard P shared with The Hollywood Reporter, the hat was designed by Vivienne Westwood for her ‘82/’83 collection. It was featured prominently in the video for Malcolm McLaren’s 1982’s “Buffalo Girls” — featuring the World’s Famous Supreme Team — one of hip-hop’s early classics. With origins coming from an old standard, 1844’s “Buffalo Gals,” by blackface minstrel singer John “Cool White” Hodges, McLaren’s version was sampled in Neneh Cherry’s 1988 hit “Buffalo Stance.” Pharrell stated that his hat is not vintage and that he bought a new copy at Westwood’s World’s End store a couple of years ago.
