Alex James‘ Sons Vintage, ironically, started out of a love for things new. As a teenager, James was immersed in a burgeoning pop culture environment: Michael Jordan halted his reign on the hardwood for ball and grass pursuits, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson hadn’t yet developed a taste for ears, and Starter was still the lead apparel supplier to football, basketball and other endeavors altogether. This appreciation for interesting contemporary goods was relegated to an eBay hobby until a chance encounter in 2007, where James and business partner Michael Mantagas found a mutual love of things vintage. James’s collection suddenly became the focus of his life, and Ralph Lauren polo shirts, old band tees, and a wealth of other goods came to comprise a company: Sons Vintage. HYPEBEAST was able to catch up with James to discuss how he got his start, peruse his extensive range of apparel, and even talk trade secrets for the latest video installment of RETROSPECT. Enjoy the video above, and be sure to check out offerings from Sons Vintage on the brand’s web page.
