After previewing the episode earlier this week, finally we’re treated to a dialogue between Pharrell and two important contemporary artists: Karim Rashid and Kenny Scharf. Rashid is an industrial designer, interior designer and architect, whose work creatively integrates a sense of fun, mischief, and even sexuality into normally mundane items such as couple’s bathtubs, bright red asymmetrical sofas, kissing candle sticks and more. On the other hand, Scharf is a painter by trade and a contemporary of Keith Haring, creating large animated murals in his own “pop surrealist” style. Together with Pharrell, the three create a formidably intellectual discussion on whether an artist is born or made, style interfering with true function, and elitism in art.
