Mariah Carey has marked another highlight in her decade-spanning career as she was honored as a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on Friday night. Following congratulatory messages from Diddy, Pharrell, L.A. Reid and Sidney Poitier, the pop diva was celebrated by a DJ set by producer and longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, and cover tributes from Joe (“We Belong Together”), Eric Benet (“One Sweet Day”), gospel star Karen Clark Sheard (“Anytime You Need a Friend”) and American Idol’s Fantasi (“Hero”).
Nas opened the show with a four-song medley including “Daughters” and “Bye Baby,” while Future had the crowd singing along to his ubiquitous hit “Same Damn Time.” Drake and Lil Wayne received the Songwriter of the Year award, whereas Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” took home Song of the Year. Pop Wansel (Nicki Minaj, Elle Varner) was presented with Producer of the Year and Mac Miller was blessed with some Social Star honors.
