Contemporary Chinese artist Yue Minjun will showcase a series of iconic self-portraits soon at the Carmichael Gallery in Culver City, California. The frozen laugh on his face reminiscent of the Laughing Buddha or Alfred E. Newman, Yue’s famous image has been reproduced across medium and genre often toward achieving humor or irony. Rejecting the “Cynical Realist” label, this Beijing-based artist continues to define art for himself by challenging social and cultural conventions with his abstract and radical graphic imagination. The exhibition will also feature the works of Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani and will run from Saturday, May 26 through to June 30, 2012.
