In addition to obtaining mass popularity, critical acclaim, and a 2012 Grammy nomination with his indie folk band, Fleet Foxes’ lead singer Robin Pecknold also makes music on his own. The talented singer, songwriter and guitarist has dropped off solo acoustic songs in the past, but it’s been a while since he’s done so. In fact, the last time he put out anything official was last March, before Fleet Foxes’ sophomore album, Helplessness Blues, hit stores and eventually landed on our—and many other critics’—‘Top Albums of 2011’ list. Now, the 25-year-old Seattle native has returned with a song that serves as a direct portrayal of his current state of mind. The track, “Olivia, In A Separate Bed,” is a demo that comes as the result of Pecknold being “legitimately single for the first time in like literally ten years,” as he declared in a since-deleted tweet the other day. On the nearly six-minute-long, heart-wrenching ballad, he holds no reserve. Through his signature sweeping vocals and poignant lyrics such as “Olivia, I still love you, and I know I will ’til I die,” Pecknold refers directly to his now ex-girlfriend, Olivia, whom he spent many years with. Although he stated that this song “will probably change,” listen below to how he recorded it while in “sadsack mode” during a perturbing time in his life.
