At the runway presentation for Thom Browne’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection, it might have appeared as though the designer simply pulled out another crop of designs from his usual bag of tricks. The word “usual,” however, isn’t exactly one that could ever be used when talking about Browne’s work or his over the top theatrics, and it certainly isn’t an accurate description of the collection he showed in Paris this past weekend. While the designer did rely heavily on his tailored signatures like pinstripe suits and ankle-bearing trousers, it might be said that he was actually on the fringe (literally) as he sent models down the runway in wild skirts and headdresses adorned with fringe detailing. Playing with proportions and offering up a boxy silhouette, Thom Browne proved to naysayers that he’s still capable of designing menswear that’s new and exciting.
