For her latest video, “The Edge of Glory,” Lady Gaga omits any controversial elements and chooses a rather simpler approach. The pop icon emerges from her window to dance on her fire escape, tips down a street to continue her choreography as Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band, who recently suffered a stroke, and plays the saxophone on a stoop. This is certainly a refreshing retreat to her trademark style of making a video that has absolutely nothing to do with the song. However, as simple as the concept for “The Edge of Glory” appears to be, there have been complicated issues behind the scenes. The visual’s initial director Joseph Kahn, who helmed Gaga’s “LoveGame” and “Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)” clips, reportedly clashed with her on set and was subsequently replaced.
