In 2010, Detroit native Christian Berishaj signed to Universal Motown Records under the name Christian TV. With the label behind him, Berishaj was becoming known for his multiple talents as a singer, producer, engineer and musician. However, somewhere in between then and now, he decided a change in direction was due. While Christian TV is an artist with numerous electro-driven pop songs up online, the music of Berishaj’s new moniker, JMSN, is somewhat of an antithesis to his other self. With its dark, brooding sound equipped with high-pitched vocals and drug references, JMSN’s new self-produced and -mixed song, “Alone,” is certainly not a radio-friendly jam. The track and its accompanying video are, however, sparking a mixed bag of love and debate for alleged similarities to two of 2011’s most popular new crooners: The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. What do you think; does the song sound too much like The Weeknd? How about the video; does it remind you of the visuals to Frank Ocean’s breakout single, “Novacane?” Does it even matter? Leave your thoughts below.
