Transcendent beyond its immediate sphere of influence, hip-hop music and the culture that surrounds it is steadily redefining traditional American culture. Once an outspoken subculture, the hip-hop community has rapidly developed into a significant influencer through mediums such as music, fashion, art and even academia. Multifaceted author and music executive Steve Stoute releases his first episode in the ongoing video series, The Tanning Effect, featuring artist Jay-Z.
Part one of the interview captures Stoute’s candid discussion with Jay-Z regarding the meaning of his joint album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, as well as the artist’s sentiments of his music as an ascendant cultural and social influencer. Part one concludes with Jay revisiting his reaction to the controversial comments made a few years ago by Cristal chairman, Frederic Rouzaud. The video series coincides with Steve Stoute’s book, The Tanning of America: How Hip Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy.
