Anne Buford’s Elevate revolves around the stories of four young Senegalese basketball players that are given a once in a lifetime opportunity to receive an education in the United States as they advance in their basketball careers. Their journey begins in the West African city of Dakar, where being the top basketball players entitles them to full scholarships to American prep schools. We see these young men changing their notion of what America is, as they settle into their new environment. Struggling with adapting to this foreign way of life – mastering the English language, learning how to drive, and meeting girls proves to be a huge step. Stereotypes are addressed in the form of hilarious exchanges between locals and these boys, who are bewildered at what is thought of them. The movie takes into consideration bigger themes and represent more than just being an inspiring movie. By easing people into the emotions of these young protagonists, it questions our belief of just how different we all are. Elevate will officially be released in theaters on November 4, 2011.
