One of Nike Sportswear’s collaborations for the 2008 fall/winter collection have involved the workmanship and fleece-making skills of Japanese brand Loopwheeler. Using vintage looms (some up to 80 years old) churning at a slow rate, Loopwheeler’s fleece yields a softer fabric which still maintains a durable construction. Together Nike and Loopwheeler developed a partnership based on one of Nike’s original running initiatives the Athletics West 1977 running club. A standard issue sweat shirt was often given to runners and in hopes of re-creating the spirit under the best possible conditions, a partisanship with one of the world’s finest was born. Together Nike and Loopwheeler hope to create a line of “future heritage” products which feature a timeless aesthetic to correspond with the garment’s durable nature. Nike has looked to two photographers, Lucila Blumencweig and Maureen Hufnagel to capture Rio Ferdinand, Marco Materazzi and Vincent Clerc as each are featured in the AW 77 Loopwheeler hoodie.
