For the 109358019358019385th time, for a starter dslr cameras, go with the D40. Then again, I'm a Nikon kinda guy. I started off with a D40 and I do not regret it.

both canon and nikon are good quality cameras but of course people will always beg to differ and have arguments about it just as mac and pc. it's really up to you what you want to get. i know people that have had canon and switches to nikon and vise versa.

Get your hands on a good entry level dslr - like said before d40 is good choice or sony a200 worked really well for me.

The differences at entry level arent massive gulfs in technology.

Read up a little about the technical side of things - so shutter speeds, Aperture, depth of field, focal length etc.

Go out and spend a whole day just getting used to the layout of the camera and all the settings it has to offer - take a picture change a setting then take the same picture again. you will soon work out what settings do what, once you know this you can start being really creative and having lots of fun.

Try to make some light trails in the dark by changing the shutter speed's on your camera - i found this alot of fun when I first started out.

Hope this helps..
