Emojis are universally utilized to make texting and communicating more fun and colorful, yet the lack of diversity within the popular icons have sparked some heated debate. As an answer, Google’s proposal of 11 new female characters has been approved by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee — they include a rock star, doctor and scientist to name a few. In addition, the Unicode consortium will also be rolling out the ability for users to choose between male or female on 33 existing icons. So rather than just having a male weightlifter emoji or a female hair-cutter emoji, everyone can now choose any gender for these professions with the option of changing skin tones as well. Also, with the Paralympics ahead, the Scope organization is urging Unicode to consider rolling out emojis depicting disabled people and athletes.

All of this is happening ahead of World Emoji Day, which is on July 17. Let us know in the comments, which emojis you like to see in the future.
